Here’s a little more detail on our essential steps for hair dye prep success:
How to Do a Hair Dye Patch Test
A Manic Panic patch test is the most important step in the list of preparation tips.
This process will help to test for an allergic reaction. If your skin reacts badly to the hair dye it’s better to find out from a small patch test rather than from a full head of hair.
Thanks to Manic Panic’s PPD-free formula, there is a reduced chance of users have an allergic reaction, as common allergens are eliminated. However, it’s always good to check!
To complete a patch test:
- Choose a small area of skin roughly the size of a penny for the test, preferably somewhere discreet, such as behind the ear or in the inner fold of your elbow.
- Wash the test area with water and soap and dab dry with a clean towel.
- Place a thin coating of your chosen Manic Panic Hair Dye upon the test area.
- Allow the dye to dry and leave it undisturbed and uncovered for 24 hours.
- Examine the test area for any signs of redness or irritation.
If there is a negative reaction to the hair dye, then the product should not be used by that person under any circumstances. Using the dye on your hair could cause an unnecessary reaction on your scalp and any other patches of skin where the hair dye comes into contact.
If you experience a severe allergic reaction we recommend seeking medical attention immediately. If you have a known allergy to certain ingredients, ensure you have checked the ingredient list before trying out the hair dye.
How to Do a Strand Test
You could also perform a quick strand test on your hair to ensure you are getting the desired results from your Manic Panic hair dye colours.
Apply a small amount of colour to a discreet section of hair before attempting a larger amount. You could try using a hair tip or a hidden section closer to the scalp.
The result of a strand test may be affected by the lightness of hair and if you have already bleached or pre-lightening it. Make sure to consider this when you colour!
Pre-Lightening / Bleaching Hair
In order to ensure your hair colour is as bright as it appears in the jar or on the colour swatch, it’s necessary to pre-lighten your hair.
This is especially important if you’re applying Manic Panic colours on dark hair. In order to get the best results, you need to lighten hair to a specified shade. Each of our product descriptions tells you the recommended level to lighten your hair.
We recommend using our very own Manic Panic Flash Lightning Complete Bleach Kit to lighten your hair. Our kits have everything you need to get your hair to a lighter shade.
Follow the instructions on the packaging and make sure to wash and rinse out all bleach residues with shampoo, as this can prevent hair dye from processing correctly.
Please note! If you’re going for light or pastel shades, lightening hair is an essential step. Applying on dark hair will give a subtle tint with dark, rich colours but you may not notice much change if you are applying lighter colours.
Wash Hair With Deep Cleansing Shampoo
Ensure your hair is squeaky clean and ready to dye before using Manic Panic Hair Colour. We recommend:
- Using a PH neutral shampoo.
- Not using conditioner, as this may prevent the dye from taking to the hair.
- Make sure your hair is thoroughly dried before applying your hair dye.
You could also consider products that help to strengthen and nourish hair. Healthier hair is better prepared to undergo the process of bleaching and dyeing.
