Top Hair Trends: Halo Hair!

Ready for a springtime full of vibrant hair and iconic colour trends? We’ve been absolutely obsessed with hair colour trends recently, from chunky Y2K stripes to peekaboo spots to oil splash ombre, colourful hair is in, and we couldn’t be happier.

But is there a trend that stands out among the rest this spring? In February, we’ve seen a huge rise in halo hair, an epic bleach look that features rings around the wearer’s head (just like a halo!). This hairstyle has been around for years and years, but it’s been rising in popularity this month thanks to US figure skater Alyssa Liu. Liu’s medal-worthy figure skating and bubbly personality have taken over the online space, captivating the hearts of people all around the globe, and her iconic alt hair, ringed with three bleached halos, has become as iconic as her. In fact, we’ve heard reports from our affiliates and ambassadors that halo hair is being requested more than ever!

So, what is halo hair, why is it such a big trend, and how can you do it yourself? Check out our halo hair guide below!

Every year, we predict lots of pastels and bright colours for the spring. This year, however, we've also been seeing a real focus on painted styles. This includes the Y2K style of chunky highlights, the peekaboo trend that never left, and of course, today’s star: halo hair!

What is halo hair?

Halo hair refers to a hairstyle with a ring (or multiple rings) in a strikingly different colour. In Alyssa Liu’s popular example, the main hair is brown, while the halo rings are platinum blonde. However, we’ve been loving the recent variations on a classic halo hairstyle. As we’re sure you know, Manic Panic is all about vibrant colour, and we’re obsessed with unconventional, colourful halo hair.

This iconic halo design features our bold and vibrant Rockabilly Blue as the main base, and a gorgeous diagonal halo in our Fuchsia Shock shade. The deep purple creates the perfect contrast to such a bright shade of blue, making for a mind-melting colour meld!

If you prefer warm tones to dark blues and purples, take a look at this pink and yellow halo hair, also by @kitti_at_the_art_house. We’re obsessed with the blend of pinks and oranges, and our Yellow Sunshine colour is the perfect bright contrast for these warm shades!

How do I do halo hair at home?

As we mentioned earlier, halo hair requires hair dye painting, which is a pretty tricky skill to do at home. That being said, we love a DIY hair transformation, so if you’re determined to get the look yourself, here are our top tips:

  • When adding bold fashion colours to your hair, you should consider pre-bleaching, so that you can get the most vibrant effect possible. If you’re not sure what your hair level is, or whether you want to bleach your hair, you can check out our pre-lightening guide here.

  • Get your equipment and station ready- gloves, a tint brush & bowl, and plenty of old towels. You’re bound to make a mess, but don’t worry. There’ll be time to clean everything up later.

  • Section your hair- you might think that horizontal halos only need to be painted on over the top layer of hair, but if you want the colour to show throughout, you’ll want to start from the bottom layer of hair and work your way up.

  • Start with the darker colour first, painting from the bottom of your hair upwards. Make sure that every strand is fully saturated. You can use conditioner or petroleum jelly to protect the halo section from getting hair dye on it.

  • Once the dark colour is on, go in with a brush and the lighter colour. Work from the bottom layer, and move your way up, blending the colours together as much as desired. Make sure the hair is fully saturated. You can use foils to separate the layers if you’re worried about colour bleeding, but as long as you place the same colours on top of each other, you should be fine.

  • Leave the hair dye to process for a minimum of 30 minutes. Different dyes take different amounts of time, but our Classic Colours range features a conditioning formula, so you can let the dye sit for up to an hour or two without damaging your hair.

  • Rinse the hair out with cold water, being careful not to rub the two colours into each other.
