Rainbow Prism Hair Tutorial ft. @kitti_at_the_art_house

Manic Panic loves colour! We’re absolutely obsessed with rainbow hairstyles, and we thought we’d shed a little light on the most complicated rainbow hair dye of all: rainbow prism dye.

Rainbow prism hair creates a holographic rainbow look that shifts from one colour to the next like an oil spill. To get a prism rainbow result, you’ll need a lot of time, precision, and willpower. But don’t worry- it’s possible!

For Pride Month 2026, we got in touch with our talented ambassador hairstylist, Kitti Clarke, so that she could show us how to get the perfect rainbow prism, step by step. Watch our new YouTube video to see Kitti’s prism hair colour technique, or keep reading for our comprehensive guide on how to do rainbow hair at home!

Kitti Clarke is one of the talented hairstylists at our ambassador salon, The Art House. Located in Colchester, The Art House prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere and bold hair creations. When it comes to rainbow hair, no one knows more than @kitti_at_the_art_house, so we knew exactly who to call!

For this rainbow prism look, Kitti used our High Voltage® range. The High Voltage® Classic Colour dyes feature a conditioning and enriching cream formula filled with bright and vibrant pigment. If you’re looking for colour that packs a punch, our High Voltage® colours are just the ticket. And thanks to the dozens of colour options, Kitti had plenty of bright tones to choose from for her rainbow hair. Shop the High Voltage® hair dyes below to get your very own customisable rainbow!

Kitti’s Colours-

The Step-by-Step Tutorial-

  1. First, prep your hair. Rainbow colours, especially light ones like yellow and orange, will have the best result over pre-lightened hair. If you want rainbow prism hair on dark hair, we recommend checking out our bleaching guide. Once you have a nice, light base, you can be sure to get a super vibrant transformation!

  2. Next, prep your space. As you can see in the video, Kitti lays out all of her equipment before starting. She separates the colours into different bowls, each with its own brush, and makes sure that they’re already in the right order. While you might not have such a professional set-up, you can still make sure that all of your pots and brushes are ready to go, and that you’ve got gloves, old clothes, foils, and towels on standby.

  3. Time for a strand test- we recommend doing a patch and strand test before using any of our products to ensure that you won’t have any adverse reaction and to check that you’re happy with the colour result. Find out how to do a patch test here.

  4. Now you’re ready to go! Start by sectioning your hair- we’re going to start with the top of your head, so section off a large panel from your forehead to the backmost point of your head. Make sure that it’s no wider than your foils. Clip back the rest of your hair so that it’s out of the way.

  5. Lay a foil against the front of your face, and lay down a thin section of hair from the top section. Clip back the rest of the section so that it’s out of the way.

  6. Holding the section of hair tight onto the foil, begin painting. Paint one row at a time, switching brushes in between and being careful not to smudge the colours. When you get to the end of the rainbow, just start again from the beginning.

  7. Once you finish the strip of hair, lift it up carefully to check that the colour has saturated all the way through. If you notice patches missing colour, carefully paint on the right shade. Then stick it back down onto the foil.

  8. Take a second thin slice from your top section, and lay it directly over the first. You should see some of the colour begin to seep through from the first slice. Use this as a guide to begin painting the rainbow again.

  9. Keep working your way up the top panel, taking one thin slice at a time. Any time the top of the slice has extra space above the previous rainbow, add the next colour in.

  10. Lay a second foil over the top of the entire section, and carefully roll the dyed hair up and away from the face. Clip the roll in place so that it’s secure and out of the way.

  11. Now it’s time for your side sections. In the video, Kitti repeats the same process for each of the side sections, pulling the hair forward onto a foil, one thin section at a time. Doing this on both sides will eventually lead to the centre of the back of your head, where you can join the two rainbows up.

  12. HOWEVER, this process can take many hours, even for an experienced hairstylist. If you want something a little simpler, you can just dye the rest of your hair in one block colour. You’ll still get the gorgeous rainbow prism effect on the top of your head, without all the extra hassle. Top Tip: Use one of the colours already in your rainbow for a cohesive and effective result!

  13. Process for around 30-45 minutes (this is our recommended processing time for High Voltage® colours. If you’re using another kind of hair dye, make sure to follow the duration time on the packaging).

  14. Once your hair has processed for long enough, it’s time to rinse. Complicated hairstyles are hard to rinse out, as you need to be careful not to smudge the colours together. For the best results, we recommend asking a friend to help you. You’ll need to take out one section at a time, lifting the foils carefully (don’t slide them off, as this could smudge the colours).

  15. Wash out the rainbow first, rinsing one section at a time with cold water. Once you’ve rinsed each section, separate the hair out a little and rinse the roots.

  16. If you dyed the rest of your hair one colour, we recommend clipping the rainbow section out of the way before rinsing the other colour to avoid colour bleed.

  17. Blow dry your hair, and admire your work- you did it!
