How To Protect Your Hair From The Hot Weather

How To Protect Your Hair From The Hot Weather

This heatwave has been one to remember, but your hair might be happy to see some cooler weather soon. Whilst we might be loving the sun on our skin, spending our days topping up our tan and spending as much time as we can outside, colourful hair is likely to be struggling. Semi-permanent hair dye and heat are not a match made in heaven; the two are best kept as separate as possible, but that’s not always possible, especially in weather like we have been having recently.

So what kind of effect does heat have on our semi-permanent dyed hair? Heat application is known to open the hair cuticle and pores; in turn, this causes the pigment absorbed by the hair to be released and allows the colour to fade and even bleed.

Colour Fading

Hair colour fading is bound to happen with all who choose to dye their hair with semi-permanent hair colour, but outside attributes such as heat can cause the colour to fade even quicker. The rate at which our colours fade is different for each person, depending on their pigment level.

Pastel colour hair dye is going to fade the quickest; their formulas hold only a very small amount of pigment, and they are likely to only last in the hair for a maximum of 4 weeks, depending on maintenance, until they have faded completely. Those much more pigmented tones are likely to last in the hair anywhere from 4-8+ weeks, depending on certain attributes.

Colour Bleeding

Colour bleeding is a common occurrence with semi-permanent hair dye, and is most obvious with highly pigmented hair colours such as deep reds and blues. The colour appears to ‘bleed’ pigment and often causes staining on clothing and bedding. So, how can you avoid colour bleeding? With highly pigmented tones, in the first couple of weeks, it is quite normal to find your colour bleeds and causes transfer, so we recommend wearing dark clothing and using dark sheets on your bed to avoid obvious staining.

In bed, your body naturally becomes a lot warmer under the duvet, which causes the scalp and hair to become warm too. To avoid their colour staining your bedding whilst in bed, many Manic Panic customers choose to wear a bonnet of some sort to bed; this takes away the contact between your hair and your bedding so that the dye cannot transfer.

Now you know what you're protecting your hair colour from, how can you successfully execute your plan? Here’s how we choose to utilise the Manic Panic products to protect our hair colour and help create a longer-lasting result.

Use Colour-Safe Hair Care

Whether you're in the heat or not, using colour-safe hair care products is essential if you want your colour to last as long as possible. Colour-safe products are designed to help protect your hair colour so that it lasts longer and minimises the rate at which it fades or bleeds.

The Manic Panic hair care duo includes gentle ingredients that cleanse and moisturise the hair, but also promote health and lasting colour. Ingredients such as Sage Extract and Sunflower Seed Extract nourish and protect your hair from outside elements that may cause breakages and dandruff.

Shampoo Less

Whilst many of us love freshly washed hair, sometimes it isn’t always the best thing for your hair. Especially in the warmer season, consider shampooing less; the natural oil produced in our hair creates a barrier that protects your colour and scalp from direct UV rays. If you find that you're beginning to notice a build-up of oils, try the Manic Panic Hair Freshener Dry Shampoo to refresh your lengths. This powder, non-aerosol dry shampoo allows users to enjoy the feeling of washed hair without the possibility of faded colour!

Nourish With a Hair Mask

You might not realise it, but your semi-permanent hair colour loves to be nourished, especially in the sun! Treat your hair to a weekly nourishment using your favourite hair mask; inject moisture and rich nutrients back into your hair for a glossy and protected result.

The Manic Panic Mermaid Mask is a colour-protecting nourishment mask, designed specifically with semi-permanent coloured hair in mind. The unique ingredients included in this product combine to create a highly beneficial formula that smooths, nourishes and strengthens the hair. Sunflower Seed Extract and Quaternium-91 protect the colour from direct UV rays and prevent it from fading under the sunlight.
