It is very important before bleaching your hair to perform a patch and strand test. This will allow you to discover any allergies or problems that may occur before applying the bleach to a full head of hair. The steps of your bleaching process should be:
Put old clothes on that you won’t mind possibly getting bleached.
Bleach should be applied to dry, unwashed hair using a hair tinting brush.
Remember to always use gloves when applying bleach or hair dye.
Split your hair into sections, how many sections are completely dependant on the length and thickness of your hair. When you are sectioning your hair, ensure the sections will enable you to easily coat and saturate all of the hair.
We recommend applying your bleach from the bottom, up! Doing this will lessen the chance of creating dark orange spots on the hair. Avoid the roots for 15 minutes before applying the bleach to them too. The roots tend to lighten a lot quicker than the rest of your hair, so working your way up the hair, will give you a better chance of achieving a more even finish.
Once your hair is completely saturated, we recommend putting it into either a shower cap or a bag. This isn’t essential however, it will keep the heat in which will help the bleach to develop faster by trapping the heat that is escaping the head.
How long should I leave the bleach on?
The amount of time that you leave the bleach on your hair is completely dependant on the colour and condition of your hair. Keep checking your hair every 10 minutes so you can keep an eye on the development that the bleach is making to your hair. Darker hair will take a lot longer to lift than a lighter colour, however, we do not recommend going over the 40-minute mark when bleaching.
When bleaching dark hair to blonde, you may discover that once you have washed out your first attempt at bleaching that your hair is orange. This is nothing to worry about, it can take more than one session of bleaching your hair to reach a pale yellow colour, however, we don’t recommend bleaching your hair immediately after this first process. It is best to leave your hair for a couple of weeks, this will enable the hair follicle to recover from the last bleaching session. Unfortunately, because the hair has already been pre-lightened recently you will need to take great care and keep a close eye on your hair during the second bleaching attempt. It is possible that you won’t need to undergo the full process of bleaching during the second attempt.
When washing the bleach out of your hair, use cool water rather than hot. Using hot water can reverse the functionality of the bleach making it ineffective, meaning you would have gone through this whole bleaching process for no reason.
Once you are satisfied with your bleached end result, we encourage toning the hair to increase its lightness.
