Holiday Hair Maintenance

The sun is shining, and it’s starting to feel a lot like summer outside. During this time of year, many of us will be off on our summer holidays, enjoying long beach days, exploring new landscapes, and getting some well-needed vitamin D. Whilst we love to feel the warmth on our skin under the sun, our semi-permanent dyed hair isn’t the greatest fan of direct sunlight and warmth. Your summer hair colour is more sensitive to the sun than you might expect, and without the correct protection and maintenance, you’ll notice just how much the sun can affect your colour. 

So, why don’t semi-permanent hair colour products like the sun? The simple answer is the heat. 

We know that it is best to avoid using hot or even warm water when washing dyed hair, so that we can enjoy our colourful hair for longer. Well, the same can be said about direct sunlight! The warmth of the sun and the direct UV rays can not only fade your colour and cause colour bleeding, but also change the appearance of your colour. 

Whilst on holiday, it’s not only the sun that you should be cautious of when considering your semi-permanent dyed hair; salt and chlorine, often found on holiday, aren’t a great mix with dyed hair either. As with direct sunlight, salt and chlorine are known to strip and fade hair dye and often leave the hair feeling dry and damaged.

Pack the essentials

Before you head into the sun

Choose to include a sun hat or a hair wrap in your holiday outfit when you’re out in the sunlight; wearing this sort of protection will stop the UV rays from coming into direct contact with your hair, and, in turn, protect your colour. 

You could also use the Mermaid Hair Mask as a barrier between your hair and the sunlight. Just apply a layer of the mask to your hair before you head out. Add an extra layer by applying a hair SPF before the mask!

Pool plans

Many holiday plans include the pool and the ocean, but remember your hair colour will appreciate you taking action to keep it from fading or changing. If you want to get your hair wet and a swim hat is out of the question, before you jump in the pool or run into the sea, try giving your hair a quick cold rinse. Filling the cuticle with cold water before you jump in will help to minimise the amount of chlorine or salt that gets into the pores.
