How Can I Use Dark Star?
Dark Star offers a great opportunity for experimentation and trying out different colour combinations.
As a background shade, Dark Star offers itself as a useful dye within certain hair colour effects such as the prism hair effect which we saw such an influx of during 2020. The light grey shade will allow for the bright colours within the prism section to stand out but also gives a solid base colour beneath or where applied.
Due to its greyish-silver colouring with purple undertones throughout, this shade is great when used to tone down other colours that may have begun to fade or even during a new application. Dark Star is great for producing ashy and smoky versions of your other favourite Manic Panic colours.
Maybe a purple-toned grey sounds right up your street. Dark Star, just like our other colours, is greatly used as a solo shade. Once applied and rinsed, you will notice the purple/silvery tones throughout. As you continue to wash your hair over the next couple of weeks, the colour will fade and produce a more ashy grey tone throughout your hair.
How should I prepare my hair before applying Dark Star?
Being a lighter shade, Dark Star makes a beautiful contender when picking your next hair colour whether that be a full Dark Star look or using it within your colour combination. However, accomplishing your chosen light shade to its truest potential can be quite the process but completely worth it.
Due to the lack of pigmentation within these colours, they will require a pre-lightened base of at least a level 9. However, a level 10 base will allow for an even brighter version and possibly a slower fade. Ensure you tone the bleached base once you have reached the correct level as this will remove any yellow or brassy tones left from the bleaching process, which could turn a much darker shade of purple once the dye is applied.
How you can keep Dark Star lasting for longer
It is important that if you want to keep your colour lasting for as long as possible, you take the correct steps and look after your hair thoroughly whilst having it dyed in this new shade. Lighter shades will fade much quicker than our more vibrant colours due to the lack of pigmentation within the colour, lasting between 2-4 weeks. You should consider certain steps you are taking whilst looking after your colour, as a lot of simple things can contribute to the fading of your colour.
Wash your hair in cool, if not cold water. Using warm or hot water will cause the hairs cuticle to open further which will allow the colour to be released and wash out gradually.
Using heat to style your hair will also allow for a faster fade rate as once again it will open up your hair cuticle. However, we understand this can be hard for one that may rely heavily on these tools, so be sure to use heat defence products to protect your hair as much as possible.
Don't wash your hair too often! Use dry shampoo, this will allow you to skip a hair wash or two!
